Mug Shot

A lot of artists send in really nice profile pictures of themselves for the gallery that is supporting them. How boring, I want to see the sweat, paint, liquor stains, and expressions that went into each work of art.

Flawed Obsessions

Since the day I have finished it I have thought my painting "Flawed Obessions" would never find favor in my heart. I have always hated this piece and for almost a year I have stored it in a dark closet, hoping it would vanish. Though for some reason I cannot get this image out of my mind and have grown obessed. I have recently taken it out and shown it to the light once again. Love this piece.

"Exaltation"

Fine tuning the first two panels and have begun the drawing for panel three. As you can tell I replaced the colors of the eyebrows and also the tan sections with primary yellow. I also added a lighter value outline of the same hue on certain sections for more emphases. Estimate to be finished with this piece next week.

"Exaltation"

I have been busy since my last post on Wednesday. I have been attending some gallery shows and have been interviewing artists. Besides all that, I have been working on my current painting. I added a frame to the top and bottom of each panel and have added white to panel two. Starting on panel three next. Photo overload of my progress begins now.

My assistant jake for the day helping with the frames.

Fact #2

Fact #2: Painting isn't dead... it's a zombie.

"Exaltation" - Panel 2/3

All set to start working on the second panel. Trimmed the size down of the painting as a whole due to a slight bump in the road. I find it interesting how the picture of me cutting the painting seems slightly religious in a way. It becomes the master and I the humble servant. The name "Exaltation" sure suits this piece.

"Exaltation" - Sketch

"Exaltation - Sketch"
© hayden john phelps

This is the sketch for the current painting I am working on called "Exaltation."  This piece is from my new body of work called "Manifest."

I am essentially painting from perfection. It is exciting to see the flaws and spontaneous critiques I incorporate into it as I recreate it through paint.

Fact #1

Fact #1 - I fucking swear like a fucking ship full of fucking sailors.

New Business Cards!!!

My new Business Cards came in the mail today!!!! Im so fucking professional you can smell the liquor on me. If you don't get the joke you are obviously a couple drinks behind me, because that was fucking hilarious.

Purchases from the "Sketchbook Show"

Piece by Britt Spencer

Best piece of the entire show, dagnabit!

Just came back from the Ashmore Gallery in my neighborhood of downtown Savannah, GA. The "Sketchbook Show," is always one of my favorite shows to go to. Not only are there amazing pieces by talented artists, but all the work is priced so that it's not going to break your bank. I finally got my hands on a Britt Spencer piece, which I thought was the best piece in the entire show, and I am beyond thrilled to own it. He is my favorite living artist by far. I also collected some interesting pieces from artists Julia Yellow, Schuyler Beecroft, and Steven Darden. Glad to add these pieces to my collection!

The best part of the show, people watching wise, was seeing an elderly couple that looked like Dorothy & Herbert Vogel. Fun stuff!

Manifest (2013) - Hit the Ground Running

Bought all my materials for my new body of work Manifest.

I know.... you are busting with excitement.

Start working on the first three paintings today.

New Year, New Profile

Manifest (2013) - Artist Statement

My current body of work expresses and amplifies my suppressed emotions developed through paranormal instances. Skewed and superstitious paintings are developed through the mental examination of the unexplained. Largely formatted, my paintings present an over–imposing nature that demands attention in any space. Through abstract figures my compositions are continuously exploring the impact of line, shape and color. Each work is a visual struggle to define its’ own actuality.
